Charlotte began her career as a bookseller in independent bookshops in London and Melbourne, most recently running the children’s department at Foyles, Charing Cross Road, and gained a Master's in publishing before becoming an agent in 2018. She worked at Tibor Jones and Jo Unwin Literary Agency, building her own list of brilliant authors before launching Colwill & Peddle with Kay Peddle.
Charlotte is always looking for fiction with a unique voice and above all a compelling plot-driver story. She loves unusual perspectives, dark twists and sharp writing. At the moment she is particularly on the lookout for really fresh and page-turning crime fiction, either procedurals with series potential or new types of incidental detectives. She would also love to find more horror and literary horror with a contemporary resonance or humour, that delivers real scares. Literary and crossover fiction that is funny and moving, with a brand new hook, is also something of interest to Charlotte and she is on the lookout for interesting cross-genre novels, too - so horror-comedies, horror-romances, historical-crime, or some other combination. Novels she wishes she had discovered as an agent include Little by Edward Carey, Boy Parts by Eliza Clark, The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward, Piranesi by Susanna Clarke and Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero.
In children’s books Charlotte is open to both fiction and non-fiction for all ages, from chapter books to Young Adult. At the moment she is seeking a funny and engaging author/illustrator with a fresh new series for young readers (5+), middle grade fiction with a new hook, brilliant world-building and characters we haven’t seen before. In YA she wants to see thrillers, romances, high concept contemporary stories including horror and comedy. In children’s non-fiction books that tackle curriculum subjects in a brand new and super engaging way appeal to her, and real life stories for middle grade and YA readers. Children’s books she would have loved to represent include Wigglesbottom Primary by Pamela Butchart, The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegelius and Gay Club by Simon James Green. And she would love to find this generation’s Judy Blume!
Charlotte would like you to submit a covering letter, 1 - 2 page synopsis and the first 5,000 words of your manuscript in a single Word document.
