LOOKING FOR: MG, YA, ADULT FICTION
Molly joined United Agents in 2017 as an assistant. She is now an Associate Agent and continues to work closely with Jodie Hodges and Emily Talbot on their lists of children’s authors and illustrators as well as building her own list.
Molly is currently looking to expand the sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and romance areas of her list, from MG through YA, crossover and up to adult books. On the adult side of her list, she represents debut and established writers, with million-copy and #1 Sunday Times bestsellers, but is especially keen to add more writers in this space to her roster. Above all, she values quality writing, compelling characters, and unique, hooky plots.
In fantasy, Molly’s taste is wide open. She is looking for anything from romantasy to multi-tome epics to weird and undefinable books set in a world that grabs you by the throat and pulls you in. She loves a magic system that is unusual or grotesque or uncomfortable, and anything that feels totally original.
Her wish list specifically includes: heist narratives, vampires, witches, marshes, non-western mythology-inspired fantasy, romantasy that does something new and different, diverse romantasy, stories with queer and neurodiverse characters, new perspectives.
Molly’s favourite science fiction is voice-led, exploring the relationship of humanity and technology – whether that’s deep in space or through the painfully mundane – and the societal and political frameworks that feed into progress. She is also keen to see cosy sci-fi, sci-fi where the science fiction elements are cleverly concealed in a rich and characterful world, and anything that could be considered sci-fi’s answer to romantasy. She loves Becky Chambers, Ted Chiang, and Ursula K Le Guin.
In horror, Molly loves anything that messes with your mind, whether that’s literary horror like The Lamb or Leave the World Behind, or suspenseful, speculative horror like The Silent Companions or Dark Matter, or something visceral and fast-paced like Hell Followed With Us. She’d especially love a horror inspired by the folkore/mythology and anything about the extremes of human experience – think shipwrecks/stranded in the Arctic/lost in the mountains. In this space she loves Mike Flanagan’s TV shows, A24 movies like Midsommer and The VVitch, and authors like Grady Hendrix, Laura Purcell, and Stephen King.
In romance, she has a real soft spot for classic tropes, swoon-worthy leads, a great sense of humour, and anything with a clear pitch that makes you sit up and take notice, but in the end it all comes down to chemistry. In this area, she has recently read and loved Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid, The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and Book Lovers by Emily Henry.
Molly currently isn’t looking for any children’s books younger than middle grade.
And she isn’t the right agent for military or espionage thrillers.
